Supporting Young People with their career choices for the future

Supporting Young People with their career choices for the future

Deciding what skills area or career you want to pursue can be a tough decision, especially when it comes to vocational subjects. That’s why the Inspiring Skills project is proud to work in partnership with Careers Wales to help give young people new experiences through ‘Have a Go’ kits.

What is Have a Go?

Have a Go kits provide learners with real and engaging insights into some of the most popular and exciting career options. They can be hired, transported and used to help primary, secondary and college students experience skills in sectors they may not have had an opportunity to experience or study.

The project works closely with Careers Wales events across the country, including ‘What Next’ and ‘Choose Your Future’ events. Have a Go kits are available for young people to see and try skills they may never have tried or thought about before. Interactive kits are available in the following sectors: Construction and Infrastructure, Digital, Business and Creative, Engineering and Technology and Health, Hospitality and Lifestyle and includes experiences such as welding, bricklaying, green energy, 2d/3d animation and hair and beauty.

Andrea Jones is the Operational Development Manager at Careers Wales and said:

“Our partnership with the Inspiring Skills project helps us raise awareness of different careers in an interactive way.

In some cases, as many as 3,000 young people attend our events and each one of those will learn in a different way. Not all learn by reading or being told.

That’s why the Have a Go kits are key- it’s a more engaging way for a young person to try out a vocation before having to make a decision on it. They’re also a great way to ensure the experiences we offer are inclusive.”

The Inspiring Skills project also works with employers and companies closely to support them to showcase their sector at Careers Wales events, using Have a Go kits.

Andrea said: “Employers love using the kits because it helps young people understand their business in a fun and interactive way. We always get great feedback from them and they are always keen to book the kits for the next careers fair.”

Working in partnership, both the Inspiring Skills project and Careers Wales aim to support future generations at, what can be, a difficult and stressful time. This valuable engagement with young people helps to deliver on the Welsh Government’s Employability and Skills Strategy and Young Person’s Guarantee.

October 2023 will be a busy month for both the Inspiring Skills project and Careers Wales, with careers events, featuring Have a Go kits, happening across Wales. You can find out more by visiting: https://careerswales.gov.wales/events
