When apprentice Adam Davis first stepped into the world of vocational skills competitions two years ago, he had no idea how far the journey would take him. Today, he stands as a prime example of the resilience and technical excellence that is defining Wales’ next generation of skilled workers.
Adam, who trains with South East Wales work based learning provider XR Training, began his competition journey at Skills Competition Wales. Entering the highly competitive Electrical Installation competition, he stood out straight away, securing a first place finish in the competition.
That initial gold medal success acted as a springboard. Taking him on from success locally he set his sights even higher and entered the WorldSkills UK heats. Competing against top talent from across the UK, he once again proved his capabilities by securing first place in his individual heat.
However, competitions at this level are unforgiving. Despite his heat victory, Adam narrowly missed out on the overall points required to secure a spot in the national finals. For many, such a close margin would be a disappointing setback. For Adam, it became pure motivation.
Competition rules meant he could no longer re-enter the electrical Installation competition at Skills Competition Wales. Instead of stepping back, he chose to step outside his comfort zone entirely by shifting his focus to a brand new challenge; the Retrofit competition.
Retrofitting existing properties to meet modern energy efficiency standards is a critical strategic priority for the Welsh Government’s green housing goals. By pivoting into this vital sector, Adam not only kept his competitive edge, but also fast-tracked his knowledge in cutting-edge, future-proof green technology.
In his very first year competing in this new discipline, Adam secured a Silver medal in the Retrofit competition as part of a team alongside fellow XR Training apprentice Lewis Williams. This achievement highlighted not only Adam’s strong individual technical ability but also his ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and contribute positively within a team.
Paul Evans, Project Director for Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales, highlighted how this journey mirrors the wider goals of the project: “Adam’s journey perfectly embodies the mindset we want to cultivate across Wales. True skills excellence isn’t just about technical mastery in a single area; it’s about adaptability and willingness to step up to new challenges. By pivoting into Retrofit, Adam has not only advanced his own career but is actively championing the vital green skills Wales needs for the future.”
Reflecting on the impact that the competition environment has on rising talent, Carl Jones from XR Training notes that the benefits go far beyond technical capability: “It pushes learners outside their comfort zones, helps them develop under pressure, and gives them a real sense of pride in their trade and abilities.”
Since his achievements in Skills Competition Wales and WorldSkills UK, XR Training has seen a noticeable increase in apprentices asking how they can get involved in competitions and what they need to do to progress. It has helped to create a positive culture where learners are striving to achieve higher standards and are motivated to push themselves beyond the minimum requirements of their apprenticeship.
Adam’s journey from a curious first-time competitor to a multi-disciplined regional champion embodies the exact spirit of resourcefulness Skills Competition Wales aims to foster. He has proven that true success is not just about the medals you win, but how you respond to challenges and adapt to the future.
