Ruby Pile, from Newport in South East Wales, has embarked on a remarkable journey from working in a local pub to becoming a professional restaurant server. Her dedication and attention to detail have earned her a coveted spot on Team UK, representing Wales at the prestigious WorldSkills competition in Lyon, this September.
Ruby's introduction into the hospitality industry began with a part-time job at a pub in Newport. This initial experience sparked her interest in the field, leading her to enrol in a hospitality management course at Cardiff and Vale College. Ruby thrived in this environment, embracing the challenges and opportunities presented to her.
Her competitive spirit was ignited when she was encouraged to participate in various hospitality competitions. Despite early setbacks, including not medaling in Skills Competitions Wales and WorldSkills UK, Ruby's resilience and determination pushed her to excel. In 2021, she won a silver medal in the WorldSkills UK Restaurant Services competition, a testament to her hard work and perseverance.
This achievement opened new doors for Ruby, leading to her selection for the WorldSkills UK squad. Over 18 months of rigorous training, UK boot camps, and extensive work experience, Ruby honed her skills, preparing for the intense competition ahead. Despite facing disappointment with not being selected to represent TeamUK at EuroSkills in Gdansk, Ruby remained focused and determined, ultimately securing her place to compete at WorldSkills Lyon.
Reflecting on her journey, Ruby shared:
"I have never been one to be afraid to fail. For me, failure is the way to success, and it has only motivated me to better myself."
Currently working at Lucknam Park, Ruby balances her professional responsibilities with her training. She credits her supportive workplace, friends, and family for helping her manage the demanding schedule.
"Lucknam Park has been amazing, allowing me to attend training and boot camps. Their support has been invaluable," Ruby noted.
Before heading to Lyon, Ruby will participate in an international pressure test in Switzerland, her second international competition. She looks forward to gaining more experience and utilising it in Lyon.
As Ruby prepares for the WorldSkills competition, which takes place from September 10th to 15th, she reflects on her achievements with pride.
"I am very proud of myself. It takes a lot to get this far, to keep going and stay positive."
WorldSkills Lyon will host over 1,400 learners from more than 65 countries, showcasing their talents on a global stage. To follow Ruby's journey and the competition, follow @iseinwales.
