Skills Competition Wales has seen another incredible year of registration numbers, with a record breaking 1,649 young people registering for the competitions in January and February next year.
Skills Competition Wales aims to raise the profile of skills in Wales and offers students, trainees, and apprentices a chance to challenge, benchmark and raise their skills by taking part in competitions across a range of sectors.
Funded by the Welsh Government and run by a dedicated network of colleges, work-based learning providers and employer-led organisations, it consists of a series of local skills competitions, aligned to WorldSkills and the needs of the Welsh economy.
The competitions cover skills areas across five sectors which include: Construction and Infrastructure, Engineering and Technology, Health, Hospitality and Lifestyle, IT and Enterprise, Media and Creative.
ISEiW Project Director, Paul Evans, said: “We’re delighted that so many young people want to be involved with SCW this year, and that the benefits of skills competitions are clearly seen by those not just in the education sector.”
This year, Skills Competition Wales will include several new competitions such as Inclusive Skills: Life Skills, which was announced earlier this year. This competition is designed to create competitive opportunities for learners with Additional Learning Needs who have a planned destination of supported living/independent living. Since its recent introduction, the competition has proven popular, with 24 registrations in total.
Renewable Energy is another new edition to the SCW portfolio. This competition demonstrates the response from education to a priority sector, and will be a team competition that will research how various technologies within the green technology sector can provide energy for homes and industry. Focussing on key topics such as wind turbines, solar photovoltaic, tidal devices, hydro turbines and hydrogen. 40 individuals will take part within 8 teams, with the winners being crowned champions of the very first renewable energy competition in Wales.
Competitions will take place in late January and early February 2023, culminating in a Celebration Event on 9th March to showcase the achievements of all competitors.
