The Creative Make-up competition is changing to place a greater emphasis on Special Effects (SFX) make-up. This session will support educators and competitors in aligning with new creative and technical expectations, while offering the opportunity to learn directly from an industry expert.
Attendees will be introduced to the updated SFX focus of the competition, with practical demonstrations and guidance on techniques and materials currently used in the industry. The session will explore the application of premade prosthetic pieces, painting and finishing skills, approaches to correcting mistakes, safe removal methods, and blood FX using a range of products and mixed mediums. Pro Bondo application and painting techniques will also be demonstrated.
The session will provide valuable insight into preparing for competition, with practical tips on training, mentoring and building confidence with advanced SFX techniques. It will also feature talks and demonstrations from a make-up professional and competition judge, helping participants understand current expectations and standards.
Led by Kirstie Stanway, Head of Make-up at BBC Casualty, this CPD opportunity draws on 30 years of industry experience. In addition to her work at the BBC, Kirstie continues to work freelance, has judged on BBC’s Glow Up (Series 6, Episode 4), contributed to qualification validation with Pearson, and co-owns the South West Make-Up Academy at The Bottleyard Studios, Bristol.
This session is ideal for educators across Further Education and Work-Based Learning, as well as competitors, who are looking to expand their knowledge of SFX make-up, strengthen preparation for competitions, and keep pace with the evolving creative make-up landscape.
Please note: places are limited to 8 participants to ensure a high-quality, hands-on learning experience.
